Black Everest

In the days following the tragic avalanche in the Khumbu Icefall in April, 2014, I wrote a series of updates about the evolving situation for Men’s Journal, as well as this interview with Ed Viesturs. Events culminated a week later, when grief and tensions within the climbing Sherpa community combined to put an end to the season — sending several hundred would-be international climbers, each of whom paid between $25,000 – $100,000 for a shot at the top, home empty handed. Whether 2014 was a boycott, a political charade, or a voluntary closure depends on who you ask, and the meaning of this tumultuous season will be debated for a long time to come.
